Zagori Region, Greece : wild landscapes, hidden villages and one of the world deepest gorge

Greece is an extraordinary blessed land. From the most beautiful beaches in the world to wild landscapes and hidden mountains villages, this country has so many unique destinations to add on your bucket list.

Away from the teal Aegean Sea and the sunny beaches, in northwestern Greece, rests Zagori one of the most beautiful mountains regions in the country. Zagori shelters 46 small villages “The Zagori Villages” and Vikos Gorge, one of the world deepest gorge. Beautiful in every season, Zagori is a bliss for hikers, nature lovers and a good choice for romantic escapes.

We visited 2 of the Zagori Villages, Monodendri and Papigko, the both fascinated me with their simple beauty, stone made houses, paved streets and incredible mountain scenery.

Accommodation

We choose Papikgo as base village from where we visited Monodendri, the second village, and Vikos Gorge located approximately 16 km away.

There are many beautiful accommodation options for a region which at a first glance looks pretty remote.
The old houses were restored and transformed in guesthouses, keeping the traditional elements and architecture. It feels incredible romantic to spend the night there.

In Papigko we stayed at this incredible beautiful traditional guest house dominated by the view of the Tymfi Mountains. This small village is quite romantic.

Another option in the area is this guest house, optimally located and over-viewing the Astraka Mountains.

Things to do in Zagori

choose a village for staying overnight and explore the area, getting lost among the narrow pathways, admiring the traditional houses and mountain scenery is the best way to explore Zagori region.
the villages are very small, being possible to make a day tour exploring the most beautiful Zagori Villages in the area.
Zagori is a paradise for hikers and a bliss for the nature and remote places lovers.
Vikos Gorge is one of the world deepest gorge and you can visit it without hiking. There are several viewpoints, being a perfect place to enjoy the sunsets.
