Speaking of getaways, some of my favourite places in Romania are the idyllic valleys of Rucăr-Bran Pass. Surrounded by Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Peeks, these hills show one of the most picturesque Romanian rural scenery.
This time we visited Șimon [prononced Shimon], a small mountain village surrounded by mountains. We arrived by car from Bucharest, the village being 261 km away. Wandering trough the hills, taking a picnic, admiring the charming rustic picture is the best treatment to forget the hectic city life.
Alongside this picturesque village there are some more: Măgura, Fundata, Peștera and Șirnea are perhaps the most beautiful Romanian villages. Their idyllic pathways are a good option for an epic bike ride also.
The rural villages are inhabited mainly by shepherds. The everyday picture of those charming and rustic places is made by the scattered houses over the hills, the peasants doing their house-choirs, and the cows, slowly returning from pasture, before sunset, with the ringing bells hanging around their necks. This picture makes you wanna stop from whatever you do and just enjoy the silence.
