I could start this post with Once upon a time, because the place I’m going to tell you about looks like something out of a tale.
During our return road trip from Austria, we had a quick stop in Sibiu, had lunch at Crama Sibiul Vechi – a traditional restaurant which I also recommend if you visit Sibiu – and then we drove to Clay Castle.

Where is located The Clay Castle of the Valley of Fairies
Hidden in Porumbacu de Sus, a village which is only 40 km away from Sibiu, surrounded by Fagaras Mountains, The Clay Castle of the Valley of Fairies (Castelul de Lut Valea Zânelor) is a unique place, whose architecture looks like something out of a tale. I was fascinated not only by its architecture which reminds me of the tales from my childhood, but also by its story: the owners are passionate people, who love Romanian traditions.
The castle is made by clay, straw and sand by the local artisans. It was designed to be a hotel, or inn I could say, having in mind its architecture, but it is not finished yet. For now, you only can visit this amazing place and explore the surroundings areas: Fagaras Mountains, Transfagarasan Highway and Sibiu.
