Almost 2 weeks ago I went to visit Belgium again. It is always a pleasure to come back in this country, even more now during summer. And since then was the last round of the World Cup, the atmosphere and the vibe were super cool. Everywhere the Belgians were celebrated. I stayed in Brussels and visited Leuven and Bruges as well.
Since I visited these cities many times I made a guide of my trip, highlighting ones of the best spots for eating local food, spots for photography and top sights.
Travel guide to Leuven
Top things to do:
- Explore the romantic and tranquil area of The Groot Begijnhof.
- Stop for a drink in Grote Markt and admire the Gothic architecture of Town Hall. Here is more information abut visiting hours and tariffs as well.
Leuven is an amazing medieval town and still a hidden gem. I love this city for its student vibe, here being one of the Europe’s oldest university. It is easily accessible from Brussels, it takes only 25 min by train from Gare Centrale and the price for 1 way ticket is EUR 5.5 (during the week). Is good to know that during the weekends the tickets are 50% off to any destination in Belgium.
One of my favorite area in Leuven is The Groot Begijnhof. Nowadays is an university residential area, being also a historical place which was established around 13th century as a community of religious women. The red brick houses surrounded by water and the cobbled alleys invites at the most pleasant and romantic walks.
We spent a beautiful and sunny day walk around these narrow alleys, stopped for some shopping – there are a lot of local boutiques with some good stuff – and eating at Ellis Gourmet Burger.

Travel guide to Bruges
It is impossible not to fell in love with Bruges in any season you would visit it. The Venice of the North, how it is called, this fairy-tale medieval town has an unique charm and vibe. Walking through the cobbled alleys or alongside the canals admiring the red brick houses, stop and try some Belgian waffles or Frites, take a boat ride are among the best ways to experience Bruges.
Top things to do
- Climb the 366 stairs of Belfry Tower and enjoy an awesome view over the Grote Markt.
- Try the local food: frites, waffles, chocolate and beer. Waffles are Belgium’s most famous contribution to the food and in Bruges you will find some of the best. My favorite waffles store is located between Town Hall and Belfry Tower (here are the maps coordinates)
- Take a boat ride. By boat you will see Bruges from another perspective and it is a pleasant way to explore the city. The price for a boat ride ticket is EUR 8, and it takes around 40 minutes. Here you will find more about the boarding points.
- St Anne’s Church is a little church with an unique and attractive design.
- The beguinage (Begijnhof) it is one of the most tranquil place in the area. The best time to visit is during spring, the flowers field makes the square even more magical.
