It’s been a week since we came back from our winter retreat in Austria. I love the diversity of this country, from the outdoors and nature landscapes to amazing city escapes. Even though the main purpose of our trip was winter sports, Austria is an ideal winter escape and for those who don’t practice any winter sport. Besides the endless slopes, there are so many incredible winter wonderland views and walks into the nature, spas and city escapes.
Skiing in Obertauern
We mainly were skiing in Obertauern (we went last year as well, here you can read the post) which is the most snowy region, the winter sports season lasting from the end of November to the early of May. The resort is situated in Salzburgerland, a great region for winter sports, with more than 100 km of slopes for all levels of difficulties. It is also a great location for day trips: during one day you are on the slopes, while the next day you can admire the Baroque charm of Salzburg, the modern architecture of Graz or escape into the fairytale world of Hallstatt (here you can read the story).
Favorite restaurants and après-skis in Obertauern
The après-skis will remain my favorite way to escape into the traditional atmosphere of Austrian lifestyle. I love the charming and rustic interior of Alpenhotel Tauernkoenig, Lürzer Alm for its après-ski parties in a cozy and wooden chalet space and Treff 2000 for its panoramic views, being a good place to have a lunch or coffee break from skiing or snowboarding. Also I recommend Die Talstation for its good food (and home made cakes) at accessible prices, being located right at the base of Grünwaldkopfbahn ski lift.
Accommodation
We visited Obertauern as ski destination several times, so we experienced both the luxury hotels inside the resort, but also the traditional guest houses located 20 minutes away.
In Obertauern we stayed at Hotel Steiner, a family owned hotel, located very close to the main slopes. The hotel is a great option for families too, I love it for the SPA areas and the culinary experience. Read more about the entire experience at Hotel Steiner Obertauern here.
There are plenty options for cozy and traditional guest houses in Lungau region, and this year we choose to stay in St. Andrä. I always loved to explore the scenic Austrian countryside and during the winter, the views are simply magical.
