If I had to choose a romantic city, Paris would be among the firsts which popped into my mind. Without a doubt a night walk along Seine is a romantic way to explore Paris. But the charm of a mountain town or a less popular city, makes it an ideal location for a romantic escape, remaining a beautiful memory for ever.
I’ve made a list with 7 of the most romantic cities I’ve visited before, some more popular than others, but all with something in common: that fairy tale and picturesque charm that will bring you joy for just being there.
Lake Como, Italy
Lake Como is like a poetry of nature. Surrounded by Alps and located just at border with Switzerland, Lake Como is easily accessible by train from Milan, the little towns alongside Lake Como being a perfect destination for a romantic getaway. Stroll the narrow streets of colorful and beautiful Belaggio, “The pearl of lake Como”, while trying some of the local specialties of pizzas, then a boat ride will take you to the beautiful Varenna, one of the most romantic towns of Lake Como, in my opinion. Why? With its picturesque and exquisite villas, the gardens with views over the turquoise water of Lake Como and mountains and the cafés and restaurants with the most charming lake views, the magical Varenna has stolen my heart. Eating pizza in Italy has never been more romantic.
Mechelen, Belgium
Mechelen has an incredible vibe and its architectural beauty shines even on cloudy days. It is easily accessible from Brussels, being at only 15-minute train ride away. Exploring the UNESCO World Heritage – the beguinage (begijnhof) – is a pleasant and romantic way to spend time in Mechelen. An unique walk on floating path along the river – Dyle Path, will lead you in Haverwerf, where you will find 3 houses with an unique architecture from 16th century: St Joseph, The Little Devils and Little Paradise. For a panoramic view over the city, climb the 500 steps of St Rumbold’s Tower.
Prague, Czech
Czech capital has a fairytale charm which leaves no one nonchalant. With so many panoramic views and bridges across The Vltava River, its architecture is unique in Europe, Prague being a great place for a romantic getaway. A stroll along Charles Bridge followed by some hours spent at Prague Castle to discover more about its culture and history but also revealing some panoramic views is a great way to step into the magical world of Prague.
Innsbruck, Austria
What can be more romantic and enjoyable than an alpine city with a baroque architecture style? The great outdoors variety and Innsbruck’ picturesque charm makes it an ideal destination all year round. I feell in love immediately with its Old Town sightseeing such as Golden Roof, Imperial Palace or Ambras Castle, the colorful houses reflected into the aquamarine river against the Alps backdrops bringing the most picturesque mountain scenery. A funicular will take you from the Congress Station, not far away from Old Town, straight to the mountains, up at 2300 m.
Hallstatt, Austria
You can visit Hallstatt as a day trip from Salzburg or you can stay overnight for more magical days. This epic little town, hidden into the mountains looks like a true fairytale place. It is one of the most romantic towns I’ve ever visited and during the winter is even more charming, being less touristy and cozier. Spend the time just strolling around and admiring all its beauty, take the funicular to Skywalk – “World Heritage View” for a breathtaking landscape, or explore the salt mine to find more about the history of Hallstatt.
Budapest, Hungary
With an impressive architecture which reflects a rich history, the Danube that crosses the two cities “Buda” and “Pest” and with so many thermal springs, Budapest is without a doubt one of the most romantic cities in Europe. At dusk the city lights come to life transforming Budapest into a magical place . The Fisherman’s Bastion is the best spot for a panoramic view over the city lights and over The Parliament House, while The Gellert Mountain is another great point of watching sunset and enjoying a panoramic view over the city lights.
Thun, Switzerland
Thun is a medieval Swiss little town, located in Interlaken, a region between two breathtaking lakes: Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The entire region is incredible beautifully, just like those postcard places, reason why is worth to spend more time exploring the whole region. The town is surrounded by The Alps, which made it even more charming and watched by its guardian angel Thun Castle since 12th century, nowadays being a symbol of the Knights’ Hall. Just being there and strolling around, admiring the nature or drinking a cup of coffee alongside the river is enough to feel pure joy.
