Mauritius island is like a piece of heaven in the Indian Ocean: it’s all about crystal-clear water where you can spot the most colorful and diverse fish species, an amazing and paradise looking coast line, lush vegetation and some of the best resorts in the world.
During our vacation in Mauritius, we dedicated some time to exploring the West Coast, where the main attractions are located, which we didn’t want to miss. Additionally, we also ventured to the East Coast, renowned for its breathtaking beaches.
When is the best time to visit?
Mauritius is a tropical island being warm and a good holiday destination year round. The summer months, spanning from November to April, are the best months to visit, as they provide the hottest weather and longer days. Conversely, the winter season from May to December offers slightly cooler temperatures, some rainfall, but still maintains warmth, albeit with shorter daylight hours (in May, sunset occurs around 5:30 p.m).
How to get around?
The easily way to get around is by car, so we rented a car from a local company. The island is not too big this is why another option to get around is by taxi. Is good to know that there is driving on the right side.
The most beautiful beaches in Mauritius
Mauritius is renowned for its stunning beaches, with crystal-clear waters and pristine sands that attract visitors from all over the world. Here are some of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius on the West Coast and on the East Coast:
West Coast:
- Le Morne Beach was my favourite beach on the West Coast, and among the most beautiful in Mauritius. It’s located at the foot of the Le Morne Brabant mountain, and the scenery there is simply breathtaking.
- Flic en Flac Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Mauritius, with a long stretch of white sand, clear blue water, and is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling.
- Tamarin Beach is popular for surf and water sports.
East Coast:
- Γle aux Cerfs is a small island, accessible by boat, and a must-visit when you are on the east coast of Mauritius. The water here is turquoise blue and crystal clear, and the sand is white and powdery.
- Belle Mare Beach is one of the most popular beaches on this side of the island. The water here is calm and clear, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
- Blue Bay Beach is a protected marine park, and the coral reefs here are teeming with colorful fish and other marine life.
Best attractions in Mauritius
From hiking the mountains to diving and swimming with the dolphins, snorkeling and taking boat rides or just relaxing at the beach, there is everything you could wish for a memorable summer escape.
- Chamarel Waterfall, located in the Black River National Park as the 2 Colored Earth
- The Seven Colored Earth
- Le Morne beach
- Boat ride to see the dolphins
The Seven Colored Earth
The Seven Colored Earth, part of the Black River National Park is a unique place on the island, the dunes were formed over the years as a result of lava flow of active volcanoes and there are no plants growing anymore since the earth is no longer fertile. During a sunny day you can easily observe the different tones of brown, yellow and red of the dunes.
There is one entrance fee of EUR 6 which includes the Chamarell Waterfall as well. Once entered to the park any of these sights, the waterfall and The Seven Colored Earth are easily accessible. All I could saw around me was an incredible lush vegetation, which fascinates with its wilderness beauty. I was so happy when I spotted some monkeys playing in the trees.
Le Morne Mountain and the beach
Le Morne mountain situated on Le Morne Brabant peninsula watches like a guardian angel over the West Coast of Mauritius. This mountain used to be the escape of the fugitive slaves (maroons how they were called) and there is also a legend which says that from its peak (556 meters above sea level) the slaves used to jump, choosing suicide as a way of freedom, in order to escape from their masters.
Nowadays Le Morne mountain is a symbol of freedom and became part of the Unesco World Heritage in 2008. The best view of the mountain is from Le Morne beach, which is also among the best beaches in Mauritius. There, is also the point for boat rides to see the dolphins, they being very close to Le Morne.
One of my favorite part of the day was the sunset: I loved how the sunset melts into the ocean’s infinite. Every end of the day was simply breathtaking in Mauritius.
There were many local markets alongside the road selling tropical fruits from their own gardens, coconut water was my favorite drink while staying at the beach.
Accommodation
If you’re planning a trip to Mauritius, make sure to explore both the West and East coasts to get a taste of everything the island has to offer. The West Coast is home to Le Morne Beach, where you’ll find some of the best resorts on the island.
The East Coast is famous for its picturesque beaches, and there are plenty of luxurious resorts to choose from if you want to indulge in a little pampering.
