About the mud volcanoes
The mud volcanoes are the result of the eruption of mud, water and gases. There are approximately 700 of mud volcanoes across the world and almost half of them can be found in Azerbaijan. In Europe the mud volcanoes can be found in Italy, Bulgaria or Romania.
The mud volcanoes in Romania are the biggest active mud volcanoes in Europe, the reason why this area is among the most beautiful hidden gems to visit in Romania.
Here the gases erupt from 3000 meters deep towards the earth surface, creating a landscape out of this world which is dominated by miniature volcanoes 1, 2 meters high, the bubbles of gas coming out from the crater and the dried surface cut by dried crusts hence the impression that you landed on another planet.
While I explored the area the volcanoes erupted continuously. All I could hear in the stillness of the evening was the sound of the bubbles of gas which create one of the most unique and out of this world landscapes I have ever seen.
When is the best time to visit
The access to the site is permitted only in days without rain, since the surface of the land is dominated by the dry mud which is not entirely solid.
I visited the reservation just before the sunset and the scenery was simply breathtaking. If you visit the site to take some amazing photos I highly recommend not to miss the sunset there.
