Peles Castle remains one of my favorite places in Romania, not only because the castle itself seems to be something out of a fairy-tale book. But I found so much magic in the surroundings, just by wandering the hidden paths into the forest, the “royal paths” how I like to call them. The houses near the castle seem to be detached from the same fairy-tale book together with the small restaurants where I love to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate after a longer walk.
During the past weeks I’ve visited the castle several times being a perfect 1 day trip. It’s a good place to spend quality time outside with lots of walking trails into the forest which are so refreshing right now.
The best time to visit Peles Castle in Romania?
I would say during fall foliage and in winter when everything is covered by the snow and the place is transformed into a fairy destination.
Located at the foot of Bucegi Mountains the castle became a magical place during the fall foliage. Then, the surroundings are beautifully painted in shades of yellow, orange and red and “the royal paths” in the forest are a perfect place for longer walks and hikes.
Here are some useful travel tips for first time visitors
- You can visit the Peles Castle either as a day trip from Bucharest (127 km away) or Brasov (40 km away).
- The castle is easily accessible by the public transportation (trains) as well. It’s only about 10 minutes walk from Sinaia Train Station to the castle, Peles Castle being the most accessible attraction in Romania by public transportation. Beside the national train railways, I would recommend the private trains companies: they are more comfortable, the prices are lower and there are few or no delays. For this trip a good option is Softrans private train line, the tickets could be bought online or directly from the train controller.
- If you are staying overnight, Sinaia is a good option for accommodation since this is where the castle is located.
- There are 2 parking areas at the Castle, the entrance fee is 20 RON (approximately 4 euro).
- Sinaia is a great place to try the Romanian traditional food. These specialties are the best: beans soup with smoked pork served in bread, polenta with cheese and cream, baked potatoes, Romanian donuts with sour cream and berries jam (papanași).
