Nestled in the Eastern part of the legendary Peloponnese, the land where Gods were born, Kinsterna Hotel speaks history, creating a unique and authentic space and experience. There the nature is and it will remain an oasis of relaxation and a source of life.
With Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman roots and centuries of history meticulously preserved, the mansion offers world-class hospitality services, culinary delights served with flair, alluring views, all designed for a harmonious approach to life.
The location is perfect, too. Only 7 km away from the Monemvasia Castle town, one of the most beautiful and well preserved places in Peloponnese.
The central “cistern” filled with natural spring water and water-lilies gives the hotel name “Kinsterna“.
A local spring which runs through the mansion is collected in this “cistern” in order to protect the water, then flows through small waterfalls to the swimming pools.
Checking in: Kinsterna Hotel
After we were welcomed by a very friendly staff, we were guided to “Number 39” suite through a stone staircase like a tunnel, leading to an opened balcony over-viewing the sea and the island of Monemvasia Castle town. At that moment I understood the place shelters centuries-old secrets.
I was fascinated by the antiques art pieces and by the original fireplace dating back to the Ottoman times, which decorates so beautifully the suite we stayed in. The balcony is overlooking the Aegean Sea, the island of Monemvasia, the olive groves and the vineyard, also part of the hotel. A high wooden ceiling creates a slightly tropical feel. Not to forget to mention that you can spot the sea straight from the bed.
There are several types of accommodation ranging from rooms and suites settled in the historical mansion, to private villas having its own pool and garden for the ultimate state of peace and luxury.
Every room is uniquely designed, but keeping the same style and art of decoration: antique pieces dating back to the Ottoman and Venetian times, traditional embroideries, high wooden ceilings, top quality personal care products and comfort.
The accommodation at Kinsterna Hotel combines the modern comfort with the antique charm: all you need for an authentic and luxury stay.
Poolside and amenities
Relax and let yourself indulged by the Mediterranean sun, while ordering a fresh cocktail from the bar and taking dips into the pool filled with natural spring water. The citrus groves, countryside views and the Aegean Sea are the perfect backdrop for that memorable Mediterranean escape. A friendly staff will bring you fresh water from the two springs located in the estate.
The cocktails are made from freshly picked fruits from Kinsterna’s own garden, together with several homemade fruit syrups. Ask the barman for “tsipouro”, a Greek traditional distilled spirit made from the rests of the wine press.
There is a family-friendly pool as well specially designed for a carefree swim, and a private beach, 1.5 km away from the mansion which is available upon request.
The culinary delights
At Kinsterna Hotel the Greek classic specialties are produced locally and are served with flair and passion.
There is nothing better than a culinary experience based on locally produced goods. Kinsterna’s philosophy is based on sustainability and self-autonomy, traditions that last for centuries.
The property cultivates a large variety of Greek grapes from which is produced the wine, there are olive groves from which is produced the olive oil and table olives, the fresh water is provided by the natural spring located at the property. The fruits, herbs and vegetables are mostly produced locally. There are over 200 species of plants, herbs and trees.
Among my favorite specialties that I have tried at Kinsterna are the traditional pies, so I had it every breakfast. It was impossible not to notice the professionalism and the attention to the detail of the staff. They even anticipated our breakfast needs. The traditional starters served at every lunch and dinner were among the best I have eaten before. The charm of Mediterranean cuisine: so simple, yet so tasty. The sea-bass served with locally vegetables and Bottarga Messolongi, known as the Greek caviar, completed by a glass of rose has made the dinner experience truly delightful.
There are several options for dining at Kinsterna Hotel. The main restaurant of the hotel “mouries” is also where we ate most of our meals. The fine dining area “sterna” creates a romantic environment combined with the delectation of culinary tasting.
They also have a Greek Tavern “linos” opened twice a week during summer where you can enjoy the best Greek authentic specialties served in a traditional environment.
A very pleasant place for drinks, snacks and a good conversation while contemplating the beautiful scenery is Belvedere.
Activities
Every activity of the mansion is like a celebration of history, of traditions, of life. The main activities are based on Kinsterna’s philosophy of sustainability and self-autonomy.
The guests can assist to the process of grape crushing during the harvest season, the demonstration of making olive oil – the traditional way – using one-horsepower olive press, or brewing tsipouro the Greek traditional drink made from left overs grapes.
Making bread with a local baker or making soap, tour the mansion in a horse-dawn carriage, cycling around or hiking through the vineyards are just few of activities that will show you the true charm of the property in a traditional way.
Kinsterna Hotel is a place where I found the spirit of Greek hospitality, exciting history and the charm of Mediterranean joy of life.
