Nestled in the Province of Brescia in Northern Italy, Lake Garda is a haven for nature lovers who enjoy strolling along the lake, admiring the gorgeous sunsets, and indulging in delicious Italian cuisine with a glass of Aperol at one of the lakeside restaurants.
Lake Garda embodies everything that epitomises a romantic getaway and the quintessential Italian summer vibe.

Where to stay
Garda Town was an optimal base for exploring Lake Garda thanks to its central location. From here, it was easy to visit some of the lake’s most beautiful towns, including Limone sul Garda, Torri del Benaco, Malcesine, Sirmione, Desenzano, and Lazise.
I also enjoyed spending time at the nearby beaches. The main beach in Garda Town was ideal for a relaxed afternoon by the water, while Baia delle Sirene offered a quieter setting and quickly became one of my favourite spots around the lake.
Lazise, Peschiera del Garda, or Bardolino are also excellent base towns to stay and explore the area.
On a previous trip to Lake Garda, I chose Riva del Garda as my base and found it ideal for exploring the northern shores of the lake. Its proximity to Limone sul Garda, Malcesine, and Torbole made day trips easy, while the mountain scenery gave the area a very different feel from the southern towns.
If you’re considering staying in Riva del Garda, you can also read my review of Du Lac et Du Parc, one of the largest lakeside resorts on Lake Garda, known for its beautiful lake views, spa facilities, and gourmet dining.

The most beautiful towns alongside Lake Garda
While every town alongside Lake Garda has its own unique charm, offering picturesque views and colourful houses, there are certain towns that stand out for their lively atmosphere and abundance of things to see and do.
This is a list of my top favourite and the most beautiful towns on Lake Garda:

Sirmione
Nestled in the Southern region of Lake Garda, Sirmione, also known as “The Pearl Of The Lake,” boasts a plethora of activities for visitors. If you have only one day to spend at Lake Garda, make sure to add Sirmione to your itinerary for a fulfilling experience.
To make the most of your visit to Sirmione, I recommend arriving early in the morning, especially during the summer months when the town becomes one of the busiest destinations on Lake Garda. Parking can be challenging later in the day, particularly near the historic centre. One of my favourite ways to experience Sirmione is from the water, and I found that a boat tour offers a completely different perspective of the peninsula, the colourful waterfront, and the impressive Castello Scaligero.

Limone sur Garda
My favorite town in Lake Garda is Limone sul Garda, located in the northwest of the lake. While still a popular destination, Limone sul Garda is less crowded than Sirmione and boasts stunning views dominated by the surrounding mountains. For me, there’s nothing quite like strolling along the romantic harbor promenade or getting lost in the charming cobblestone streets while taking in the vibrant, colorful houses. Limone sul Garda is also known for its beautiful lemon-themed souvenirs.
Limone sul Garda is easily accessible by boat from Sirmione or Malcesine. There are boat tours available that visit many of the most beautiful towns on Lake Garda, making for a wonderful car-free alternative.

Riva del Garda
Nestled between the lake and towering mountains, Riva del Garda offers some of the most dramatic scenery around the entire lake and feels noticeably different from the southern shores.
During a previous visit, I stayed here for a few days and found it to be an excellent base for exploring Limone sul Garda, Malcesine, and Torbole. Beyond its convenient location, I loved wandering through the charming old town, enjoying the lakeside promenade, and taking in the spectacular mountain views that surround the town from every direction.

Torri del Benaco
Torri del Benaco quickly became one of my favourite towns on Lake Garda. The small harbour, colourful waterfront buildings, and relaxed lakeside restaurants create the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger long after dinner.

Torbole
Torbole is particularly popular with windsurfers thanks to the reliable winds that sweep through the northern part of Lake Garda and create ideal conditions for water sports throughout much of the year. Despite its reputation as a windsurfing destination, Torbole is also a lovely place to relax by the lake. The beach is suitable for swimming, and the combination of crystal-clear water and mountain views makes it one of the most scenic spots on the northern shores of Lake Garda.
