Winter season has its own charm: nothing compares to the cozines of a winter getaway into the Alps, the slopes and the winter sports, or the SPA and relaxing time while watching the snowfall and the snowy mountains on the window. I was so happy to be able to escape to the mountains for few days, and Austria is a perfect winter destination. This is why we took a road trip at the beginning of December to Salzburg, Hallstat and Obertauern.
Checking in: Hotel Steiner in Obertauern
Hotel Steiner is a family owned hotel located in Obertauern, Salzburger Land, one of the most snowy winter resorts in Austria. The hotel is a delightful place to escape the ordinary, into an oasis of charm, coziness and elegance due to its location – just on the slopes – but also due to its design, and most importantly, the hospitality and professionalism of the staff. Just as we arrived we were welcomed by our delightful hosts and since it’s the holiday season, the Christmas decoration made the the place even more fairy like.
Because even the smallest detail makes the difference, the owners – Steiner Family, are personally involved in the services offered, which gives a personal touch to the guests. The entire concept of the hotel is the result of making everything with care and passion, which turns your holiday into a true relaxing and enjoyable time.
Skiing in Obertauern, Austria’s most snowy ski region
Obertauern is located in Salzburgerland, a great region for winter sports with more than 100 km of slopes for all levels of difficulties, being at the same time a great summer getaway for its beautiful mountains landscapes. Since it’s the most snowy region in Austria, the ski season starts at the end of November and carries on to early May. Obertauern is 1 hour drive from Salzburg, 1 hour and a half from Hallstatt or 2 hours from Graz, which makes it a great location for day trips.
The Hotel Steiner is located on the main road of the ski resort in the vicinity of the shopping center. The slopes start just across the street and there are many ski renting stores nearby. We rented our equipment from a partner’s hotel which is located very close and at the reception you may find your ski lift card prepared for your stay. A very important detail, each room at Hotel Steiner has its own heated locker for the ski/ sports equipment, where you can leave it overnight.
The culinary experience at Hotel Steiner Obertauern
We had an awesome gourmet experience, and not only the food was delicious, but every day we were surprised by the chef with a new dish. I liked that the meal time was so relaxed, so we could easily schedule the time spent on the slopes.
The restaurant serves a full board at choice. The breakfast time was so pleasant and it felt so cozy just looking out the window at the snowy mountains while drinking my coffee. During dinner time the restaurant turned into an elegant but cozy and comfortable place. I felt so good and spoiled by being surprised every time with a different gourmet menu and enjoying a delightful culinary tasting.
The SPA and relaxing areas
The SPA area is the ultimate retreat in order to spoil the body and the mind after a day on the slopes. Hotel Steiner provides fully bathrobes for the SPA, magazines and fresh water from the hotel’s spring. For relaxing moments there is a wellness center with various sauna types, cozy spaces for relaxing with a beautiful view where you can read a magazine or admire the mountains landscape. There’s a big pool with a view over the slopes or a smaller Jacuzzi pool, and besides the SPA area, on each floor of the hotel, there are relaxation rooms with panoramic views over the mountains. I still remember the time we were cosying up at the tranquility of a relaxation space with panoramic views over the snowy mountains. Nothing compares to a good winter escape.
