Although I miss traveling abroad, I find joy in spending more time at home and discovering new places of entertainment in my hometown, but also to return to places in my country that I have visited a lot time ago.
Yesterday we went for cherry picking straight from the source. Beside the fact that cherry picking is a very pleasant activity and the taste of the fruits is much better when you have picked it yourself it is also a good way of supporting local and small businesses. There are many farms located near urban areas which organize fruit picking days during the harvest season.
Thus, the fruits are no longer sent to the big supermarkets, but people come to pick the fruits themselves and then take some home. And besides, this is a really fun and nice opportunity for a picnic and spending some quality time time outside, in the nature, away from the city hassle.
When is the best time for picking cherries
The picking time for cherries starts from late May until mid to late June, but it depends of many factors such as weather and region. Also, the picking time can be different from year to year. So, we called at the farm in advance and asked when is the best time for picking cherries.
It is such a fun and pleasant outdoor activity, I love the idea of having my basket full of red fresh cherries hand picked by myself.
Tips to make cherries last longer
- It’s better to refrigerate the cherries immediately upon the arrival at home, so they will last longer than if they are kept outside the fridge.
- Also, the cherries will last longer if the stems are left attached.
- The cherries will be washed only when you are ready to eat them, otherwise they will loose their quality.
