I have always believed that the best travel wardrobe is the one you barely have to think about.
Over the years, I have learned to pack less, not more. Because carrying fewer, better pieces simply makes travelling easier. The challenge, of course, is choosing smart pieces that can adapt to changing temperatures, different occasions, and the realities of life in transit.
Natural fibres have always been at the centre of my wardrobe. In hot weather, I wear 100% linen. For everything in between, I often wear 100% cashmere.
Cashmere is the material I pack most often and rely on when temperatures fluctuate. It is comfortable on a plane, effortless to pack, easy to layer, and remarkably adaptable when the weather refuses to follow the forecast.
These are the four cashmere pieces I find myself packing again and again:
1. The Lightweight Cashmere Sweater
If I could bring only one cashmere piece on a trip, it would be a lightweight cashmere sweater. For me, the best cashmere sweater for travel and beyond is the Cable Knit Cashmere Sweater from Onika Knitwear – an artist-owned label based in Salzburg focused on premium knitwear that lasts a lifetime, blending traditional hand-knitting with limited small-batch production from natural fibres.
What I appreciate most about this cashmere sweater is its versatility: it can be worn over a silk camisole on a cool morning, draped over the shoulders on a summer evening, or layered under a trench coat. It pairs perfectly with jeans, skirts, linen trousers, or shorts – essentially everything already in my wardrobe. It gives me the right amount of warmth just when I need it, alongside long-lasting comfort.
2. The Cashmere Triangle Scarf
The cashmere triangle scarf is one of the most useful accessories I own. If you are looking for the best triangle scarf for life on the move, the secret always comes down to shape and weight. A medium lightweight cashmere triangle scarf provides just the right amount of warmth during transitional temperatures and adapts effortlessly to different outfits.
My absolute favourite is the Cashmere Triangle Scarf from Onika Knitwear because is made of 100% premium, responsibly sourced cashmere, and comes in a highly versatile range of colours. I wear mine with a trench coat in spring, over a simple T-shirt during travel days, or layered over the cable knit cashmere sweater when the weather becomes cooler. Because of its shape, it feels effortless to style. Folded, wrapped, draped, or loosely tied, it adds warmth without bulk and occupies very little space in a suitcase.
3. The Lace Cashmere Scarf
Some travel pieces earn their place because they are practical; others, because they make every outfit feel slightly more special.
I often pack the Lace Cashmere Scarf from Onika Knitwear because it transitions effortlessly from a day to evening look. For holiday evenings in particular, I wear it over dresses when dining outdoors, around my shoulders on a lakeside terrace as the sun disappears behind the mountains, or to the opera when the occasion calls for something refined yet understated.
What makes it particularly suited to travel is its combination of lightness and warmth. It feels delicate but provides surprising comfort when temperatures drop after sunset.
4. The Cashmere T-Shirt
A lightweight cashmere T-shirt forms the foundation of a travel wardrobe built around quality rather than quantity. It is one of those pieces that quietly becomes indispensable.
This cashmere t-shirt from Onika Knitwear is a personal favourite, also made from 100% responsibly sourced, premium cashmere. Paired with linen trousers, bermudas, or a relaxed skirt, it works beautifully across a wide range of temperatures and settings. Worn alone, it feels breathable and comfortable. Layered beneath a jacket or blazer, it becomes a practical base layer without adding bulk.
What I particularly enjoy is the way fine cashmere feels against the skin – soft, light, and naturally temperature-regulating. It remains perfectly comfortable throughout the day, whether you are walking through a city, spending hours in transit, or sitting outdoors long after sunset.
However, a cashmere t-shirt, even a lightweight one, isn’t designed for the high heat and humidity of peak Mediterranean summer days, where linen remains the absolute best choice. For everything in between, it shines.
Why Cashmere Travels So Well
When choosing clothing for travel, versatility matters more than quantity. Cashmere’s natural ability to regulate temperature means it remains comfortable across a surprisingly wide range of conditions. It provides warmth when needed, yet remains breathable when temperatures rise. It is lightweight, compact, and naturally resistant to wrinkles, making it ideal for life inside a suitcase.
Most importantly, it feels good to wear. And when a garment feels comfortable from the moment you leave home until the moment you return, it tends to earn a permanent place in your travel wardrobe.
These are the pieces I return to season after season – not because they are fashionable, but because they consistently make travelling easier, lighter, and more enjoyable.
